B-Rated Safes

The B rating is an non-standardized industry rating.  This means that the rating is not verified nor are there any formal written standards to which manufacturers must adhere.  In general, the industry recognizes a B-rated safe as having a 3/16" to 1/4" thick steel body with a 1/2" thick steel door.  Locks, relockers, hardplates and other security devices are not specified.  This gives the B rating a very broad basis for application.  Thus, B-rated safes can range from very minimum security boxes with little more than a lock and a hinge, to more high security safes that contain hardplate, relockers, dead-bolts and other security devices.  Note that the steel thicknesses are a combined total.  So, for example, a safe may have a material sandwhiched in between 2 pieces of 1/8" steel in the body and still be considered a B-rated safe.

Also note that often manufaturers will distinguish between the rating on the door and the rating on the body.  So they may sell a C-rated door with a B-rated body.  This is most often done with in-floor safes; since the majority of them are installed into concrete, the rating of the body doesn't matter as much as the rating on the door.  We at Hayman Safe do this by offering a C-rated door upgrade for all of our FS (in-floor safe) models, while keeping the body at a B-rate for our steel safe bodies.

In addition to the industry standard, all B-rated safe doors in the Hayman lineup contain a deadbolt, a relocking device, hardplate, and fucntional bolt-work as additional security.  The exceptions to this are the K3 and L1 series safes which are too small for bolt-work and hardplate, and the Economy door for the S Series safes that have no bolt-work for a price reduction.

 

C-Rated Safes

E-Rated Safes

The E rating is an non-standardized industry rating.  This means that the rating is not verified nor are there any formal written standards to which manufacturers must adhere.  In general, the industry recognizes a E-rated safe as having a 1" thick steel body with a 1-1/2" thick steel door.  Locks, relockers, hardplates and other security devices are not specified.  This gives the E rating a very broad basis for application.  Thus, E-rated safes can range from minimum security boxes with little more than a lock and a hinge, to more high security safes that contain hardplate, relockers, dead-bolts and other security devices.  However, it is very unusual for a manufacturer to develop an E-rated safe without additional security devices.  Note that the steel thicknesses are a combined total.  So, for example, a safe may have a material sandwhiched in between 2 pieces of 1/2" steel in the body and still be considered a E-rated safe.

Also note that often manufaturers will distinguish between the rating on the door and the rating on the body.  So they may sell a E-rated door with a C-rated body.  This is most often done with in-floor safes; since the majority of them are installed into concrete, the rating of the body doesn't matter as much as the rating on the door.  However, this is not done very often with E-rated and it is not advisable to have a E-rate door with a C-rate (or below) body due to safety concerns.  If the door weighs more than the body it can tip the safe over.  For similar reasons, we cannot put an E-rated door into any floor safe as the door will be too heavy to open even with springs to assist.

We currently do not offer any full E-Rated safes in our standard production line as the demand for them is not very high.  However, we have frequently built E-rated safes as they provide similar protection as a TL-15 rated safe without the additional cost of adding a U.L. Certified label.  Please visit our Custom Section for more information.  Note that E-rated safes are very, very heavy.  If you order an E-rated safe, be absolutely sure you can handle moving the weight of the safe.  As an example, an E-rated safe approximately 3' (feet) high, wide and deep can weigh more than a car.

 

U.L. Residential Security Container (RSC)

U.L. (Underwriter's Labratory, Inc.) is an independent, third party product certification organization that rigorously tests products to ensure they conform to certain safety and security standards.  Once a product is certified, it carries the U.L. label to give consumers confidence that the product will provide a certain degree of security and safety.  As part of the certification, U.L. will routinely visit the manufacturer to make sure the certified product continues to meet the standard.  Please note that the U.L. certifications mentioned here do not specify any kind of specific construction materials or techniques.  However, the manufacturer has only a small leeway in changing the design of their product before they have to get the product retested in order to maintain the certification.  So unlike other ratings (like a B-rate or C-rate), U.L. certified safes are tested against specific types of attacks for a pre-determined net working time.  Note that while it may seem that the net working time is small (and thus provide little protection), the time mentioned is not describing the actual time it took to get into the safe but the total time that tools were actually touching the safe while trying to get inside.  Thus, it could take several hours for a U.L. technician to employ only 15 minutes of net working time. 

The RSC rating is based on a net working time of 5 minutes using a wide variety of tools against the door.  The RSC rating also states the minimum rating required for any lock used on the safe as a U.L. Group 2 lock.  Note that we do not sell any locks with a rating less than this.  The tools used in the attack are basic household tools easily found in most households.  Thus they will only use a standard pry/crow bar, a drill with a 1/2 HP motor, hammer, chisel, etc.  In general, RSC rated safes are good for most residential applications that don't require security from professionals with high-powered tools.  It is important to note that the RSC label is a fairly broad label.  The next security level up, the U.L. TL-15, is actually a very large step up from the minimum requirements of the RSC label.  So just because two different models of safes carry the RSC label doesn't necessarily mean they offer the same level of security.  A great example of that is our DynaVault and MagnaVault (MV5) series.  Both models carry the RSC label; however, the MV5 models carry a significantly higher level of security than do the DynaVaults.  Therefore, it is important to compare all the security features of the models you are looking to buy rather than rely soley on the rating.

Group 2M lock.  Unlike the RSC, which uses standard household tools, the TL-15 uses very high powered tools that would be employed by professional locksmiths and thieves.  These tools include high-speed drills utilizing tungsten-carbide drill bits, grinders, abrasive wheels, power saws, hole saws, pry bars, wedge, sledge hammer, etc.  In general, TL-30 rated safes tend to be purchased by Jewelers, Collectors, and anyone that is looking to protect high-value items. The TL-15 rating is not nearly as broad a category as the RSC rating.  Because manufacturers are looking to provide a competitively priced product, most TL-15 rated safes will be near the minimum qualifying requirements for the rating.  This generally provides the pricing for the customer while still maintaining the security rating.  However, this does not mean it isn't necessary to compare the security features between models and manufacturers.  You should always do a thorough comparison before purchasing a TL-15 safe to make sure it meets your specific requirements.
